Exchange students
If you are a citizen of a country outside the EU and you are planning to study in Sweden for longer than three months, you must have a residence permit for study (study permit). The permit must have been issued before you can travel to Sweden.

If you need an entry visa depends on where you come from. The lists of countries whose residents require a visa can be found at the Government Offices of Sweden. You should also confirm possible visa requirements with the Swedish Embassy or Swedish Consulate External link, opens in new window. responsible for your home country.
If you do not need an entry visa, you must still have been granted a study permit for studies longer than three months.

You will need the following when you apply for a study permit:
- Your Letter of Acceptance
- Proof of health insurance
- A passport valid for the duration of the studies in Sweden
- A bank statement in your name in English with the currency clearly stated, showing that you have enough funds to support yourself for the duration of the permit period you apply for. The bank statement should not be dated earlier than 4 months before the start of the studies at JU.
Please note that you can submit your application for study permit at the earliest 4 months before the date you set as the permit start date. Please note that "mobility studies" (as it is mentioned on the Migration Agency's website) is not the same as regular exchange studies. As an exchange student, you should apply for a normal study permit for higher education.
If your home university is in an EU country, you should apply for a study permit from that country as it is your current legal residence.

Start and end date for the permit
Your letter of acceptance should have information on when the studies start and when they end. You can apply for a permit starting on the first of the month when the studies will start (1 August if the studies start 19 August). As the end date for your permit, you can put 2 weeks after the official end of the semester (or academic year if you are staying for two semesters).
Examples:
One semester: from 13 January to 1 June 2025 - you can put 1 January to 10 June 2025 on your permit application.
