Welcome to Jönköping University (JU), a modern university characterized by internationalization and entrepreneurial spirit. In both education and research, JU works closely with industry and society. Our official website, ju.se, is designed to serve as a comprehensive source of information for current and prospective students, researchers, employees as well as visitors seeking information about our educational programmes, research activities, events, and services.

The ju.se website strives to be accessible and user-friendly for everyone, regardless of technical abilities or functional variations. We are continuously improving the accessibility of the website in accordance with international standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 and EN 301 549 to ensure that all information and services are available to all users.

By using our website, we hope that you will easily find the information and resources you are looking for. JU works continuously to improve ju.se and welcomes feedback from our visitors to make the website more accessible and inclusive for everyone.

Applicability

Our goal is to comply with the WCAG 2.1 and EN 301 549 accessibility guidelines. These guidelines include many requirements, which you can read more about here (in Swedish): https://www.digg.se/webbriktlinjer/lagar-och-krav/det-har-ar-en-301-549-och-wcag

In short, the guidelines primarily address the following categories that must be accessible:

  • Web text content. This includes all text on our web pages, PDF files and other documents intended to be read on the website.
  • Images and visual media. This type of media must be supplemented with text alternatives/descriptions to make the information accessible to people with visual impairments. This also includes navigation elements such as buttons and menus.
  • Audio and video. Video content requires subtitles and text transcripts.
  • Interactivity and navigation. Forms, menus, links and other interactive elements should be usable with a keyboard and easy to understand and navigate, even for users with limited mobility or visual impairments.
  • Adaptability and responsive design. The website should be adaptable to different screen sizes, orientations and zoom levels without losing functionality or content.
  • Technical accessibility. The underlying code and technology for the website must be adapted to be compatible with assistive technologies such as screen readers and special keyboards.
  • Time-based media. In addition to text alternatives for audio and video, it must be possible to pause, stop and control media that plays automatically.
  • Compatibility. The website should use standardized coding techniques and be compatible with a wide range of browsers and operating systems.

Website accessibility status

We are aware that parts of the website are not accessible. This applies in particular to older material, some of which are exempt from the accessibility directives, such as the following:

  • Content published before the threshold date for the WCAG 2.1 and EN 301 549 accessibility directives.
  • Live webinars, events or other events that have been recorded. These may, for example, lack subtitles or have poor sound quality.
  • Third-party content. Content that is controlled by third parties and, for example, integrated into our site via APIs, integrations, iframes or similar. This is material that we do not control.
  • Documents and media that are only of archival interest and are not used in active processes may be exempt.
  • Non-text content that is not intended to be used for a specific purpose, such as files or media that do not play a critical/relevant role in information transfer or functionality on the website.

We are constantly working to improve the accessibility of the website and its key elements.

Testing and evaluation

The website was built in 2015 and since then, several efforts have been made to test and evaluate its accessibility from different perspectives. These include the following:

  • In December 2017, Funka Nu conducted an independent review of ju.se
  • In August 2019, a thorough review of contrasts in our web colours was carried out with the help of the web agency LimePark.
  • In April 2023, an accessibility analysis of important elements on the website was carried out. The analysis was performed by Consid.

Our CMS (Sitevision) performs continuous tests whenever content on the website's pages is updated. Before updates are published, content is scanned from an accessibility perspective to ensure, among other things, that alt texts are present, headings are correct, interactive elements are set up correctly, etc.

Measures to improve accessibility

In February 2024, a preliminary study of ju.se was initiated with the aim of preparing for a redevelopment of ju.se. In this work, accessibility in accordance with applicable legal requirements and directives is a mandatory requirement. The launch of the new website is planned for Q4 2025.
