Joe Astrachan is Emeritus Professor of Management at Kennesaw State University as well as CeFEO Affiliated Professor at Jönköping International Business School, Faculty Scholar at Cornell Family Business Scholar and Witten/Herdecke University. With more than 30 years of experience with family businesses, he has earned numerous awards for his research and work.
Joe Astrachan has received numerous awards for his research and service from family business, entrepreneurship, management, and research-oriented associations including awards form the Family Firm Institute and the Family Business Network International. He is author or coauthor of more than 25 book chapters, 48 scientific publications, and ten books including the much acclaimed Communication and Conflict in Family Business, and Mechanisms to Assure Family Business Cohesion: Guidelines for Family Business Leaders and Their Families. He is a frequent speaker on the topic having given more than 300 speeches around the globe. Dr. Astrachan is founding (former) editor of the scientific publication the Journal of Family Business Strategy, past editor Family Business Review.
Joe Astrachan has over 35 years experience studying and working with family companies and has spoken in over 45 countries. He has served on a total of 19 boards of privately owned family businesses (currently serving on 10) in a variety of industries including: heavy equipment, automotive, restaurants, building materials, food manufacturing, retailing and distribution, commercial and multifamily real estate, and healthcare. He comes from a family business background (container and tanker shipping, coal mining and pharmaceuticals).
A 2018 article in Journal of Small Business Management named him a top 25 leading scholar in entrepreneurship. He has written more than 25 book chapters, more then 70 scientific publications and 10 books. Joe is also a past editor of both of the premier research journals in family business.
He earned his BA, MA, MPhil and PhD at Yale University.
