Jönköping University delivers the most theses on entrepreneurship and innovation in Sweden

Despite the pandemic, innovation and entrepreneurship research in Sweden has maintained a healthy output. What is more, Jönköping University has delivered the highest amount of theses in this field of research out of all Swedish higher education institutions under 2020 and 2021. This was highlighted last week in ESBRI's list of theses in Innovation and Entrepreneurship.

In 2020 and 2021, a total of 19 Swedish higher education institutions delivered 68 theses in the field of entrepreneurship and innovation and Jönköping University (JU) accounted for 10 of these.

“It is positive to see that the research area is thriving in Swedish higher education institutions. The area is, by its very nature, constantly uptodated. The fact that we in Jönköping, despite our relative smallness, account for the most significant volume of theses in the country may seem surprising at first glance. However, it is a result of a conscious focus on being one of the world's most exciting environments in innovation and entrepreneurship research,” says Jerker Moodysson, Dean and Managing Director at Jönköping International Business School (JIBS), Jönköping University.

JIBS has focused on combining scientific excellence and practical relevance since its inception in 1994. Småland and the Jönköping region have a long tradition of entrepreneurship and is home to many small and medium-sized enterprises with a high degree of internationalization. The ambition has always been to develop and maintain close relationships with companies and other organizations in the region. JIBS has chosen to focus its research on the three interdisciplinary areas of entrepreneurship, ownership and renewal. By concentrating research on a couple of focus areas, JIBS has invested wholeheartedly in what they do best, resulting in relevant research and internationally recognized results. JIBS research in entrepreneurship is ranked second in the world and number one in Europe.

According to ESBRI's list of theses, twice as many women (22) as men (11) defended their doctoral thesis in 2021. However, there was a more even race in 2020 (19 men and 16 women). Even among JIBS doctoral students, the majority were women.

“We aim for diversity among both students and faculty. Internationalization and equal opportunities are core values at JIBS and Jönköping University. There is still scope for improvement at senior positions, but it is very encouraging to see a growing share of female researchers among the recent cohorts of doctors. If we take care of their talent, we will also reach a more even distribution among professors in the future,” says Jerker Moodysson.
